How Does She Do It?

Restaurant hunting has been a long-held indulgence of mine. You know the drill… get on a fairly populated street, then cruise until you find something that’s either really nice-looking or really seedy and frightening. Either way, you’re guaranteed a large serving of amusement. I’ve discovered a particular trend in the places we find, depending on who I’m with at the time. Rebecca and I tend to find trendy little Westside cafes with nice selections of healthy entrees. I can guarantee that I’ll be fairly happy with most of the menu when I’m with her. Sheila, on the other hand, has …

Fragments

…continued. Just not from anywhere most people will recognize. I’m not much of a talker, not really. At least, when left to my own devices. Part of it is an inborn reserved nature, but a large portion probably stems from a cultural legacy of silence. Which, though never directly taught, still managed to make its print on me. I don’t remember in my entire childhood ever having sat down with my parents for a serious ‘talk’ on anything. Not that I’m terribly close to them today, but I understand them perfectly. Actions speak infinitely louder, and an accumulation of actions …

Urrrrgh.

The errands never end. Last night was spent at Sheila’s doing some of my tax forms… okay, so we actually spent only half an hour on those and another five hours watching television. Fair warning, never let me near one of those blasted machines. After fighting morning traffic back to my apartment, spent another hour haggling with the bank and my ISP to get back the money that they’d collectively tried to swindle from me through a series of complicated (but mistaken) charges, overcharges, and surcharges. That solved, I must now venture back into the city to find a federal …

Sleepwalking

“Do you believe in ghosts?” my roommate asked me just the other night. “I used to be a hardcore science major. You’re one right now. What do you think?” “I know, but… well, I saw something.” Isn’t that always how it goes? I raised an eyebrow, but listened anyway. It seemed that the day before, she’d gotten back home late, after I’d already gone to sleep. I didn’t even hear her when she came in the room we share. Around 4ish, she said, she’d woken up to the sound of light rattling and saw a face near her right shoulder. …

Interlude

Yesterday, Sunday, I was up at 7AM. It was Persian New Year’s, you see. Alright, I admittedly did not have any clue it was until a couple of days ago when Sheila decided that she needed to bring reinforcements with her to a family picnic to save her from mind-numbing boredom. This was understandable and I thought it’d be fun to see a bit of authentic Iranian culture up close and personal. And okay, the offer of free food is always hard to pass up. So with about one and a half hours of sleep, I sprang up, changed clothes …
