On being “American” in Finland

Oh dear. I hate to sound like an unique American snowflake in the great socialist North, but here goes. I have been sent links to Tim Walker’s “Bad American Habits” listicle by a couple of people now. The first time, I just laughed at it and explained to the forwarder (non-American, non-Finnish, thought quite rightly that any writings by any Americans might amuse me) that while it was representative of some Americans living in this country, we came from countless different backgrounds and I happened to be from one that did not readily relate to all his points. Then I …

Lame harvest is better than no harvest.

So yeah, the garden thing? Didn’t so much happen this spring/summer, due to our new foofy-haired addition to the family. We have a lot of fruit bushes and trees, however, and the long, warm summer means lots to harvest now. I’d been fretting over the logistics of doing this with baby in tow and didn’t feel up to it until this morning. Not that I had any special breakthrough — it just seems that sometimes the best time to try something new is when you’re just too fed up to care about the details. Now, we have been having a few …

It followed us home, can we keep it?

Soooo. Short version? We have one of these now: Long version? Here we go. Not for the squeamish, be forewarned. Tuesday, May 13th, 6PM or thereabouts. Hubby had just got home from a grocery run after work and we were settling down to watch the latest Game of Thrones (we are now two episodes behind, thanks to bubs) when I felt something go *pop* and a slight trickling started. Nothing dramatic or gushing, thank goodness, but definitely something different from the normal routine. I sat there for a moment, with a look of “huh, that’s new” on my face, before …

Status update (aka An Ode to Gaviscon)

Okay, let’s see… what’s going on these days? Well, as you may have noticed if you’ve landed here, I’ve decided to consolidate all my various blogs into one big one. Easier to do now with the spiffy new magazine layouts than it was a few years  back. 2013 done, only a gazillion more years to go 😛 I’m taking the opportunity to clean up links, better organize categories and properly tag photos, so who knows when that will be done. Good thing I’m in an especially OCD frame of mind these days. Offline, pretty much the same story. I noticed …

General life updatish.

Wow, haven’t been on LJ for ages. I’m posting here because my personal blogs are experiencing technical difficulties. Will repost there when things are cleared up. Anyway, this is a huge updatish post for everybody that I meant to talk to but haven’t been able to yet. Hope it explains things a bit and that I’ll get to chat with you soon. PS. Because the majority of you are female, you probably won’t mind but I suppose I should warn that there are references to all sorts of medical-related stuff behind the cut. Right. So the last half year has …

Starting Anew.

So, this is our first week here in our new Finnish digs and I’ve got an entire kitchen to stock. Just about the only things on the shelves were sugar, salt, and half a packet of vegetable stock cubes. Sigh. I was trying to explain to the boy this morning how tedious and expensive this can be — of course, I did all the shopping for our last pantry so he never really experienced that particular pleasure. Still, I do look forward to being more selective in my purchases so I don’t end up with those inevitable bottles of crap …

I can haz terabytes!

Am backing up my computer in anticipation of upgrading to Windows 7. Have nearly filled a 2TB external with all my crap. Am forced to ask myself, “Do I really have enough junk in my life that I need 2TB?” Am then forced to ask myself a more damning question — “And how much of that is in cat photos?” Things you don’t want to know about yourself surface at 5AM when you’re suffering from jetlag. Oh, boy.

Networkin’ it.

Have tentatively agreed to go to an alumni/student career speaky-type thing later this month. Mostly because I do have a loyalty to the school, believe that I gained something truly useful from having attended there, and continue to make phenomenal contacts from their most recent graduates. Still, these things always come with that bothersome grain of doubt because, well, who the hell am I to be answering questions about people’s futures? Last time I did this was as a student speaker for new admits and by my second time around, I was probably scaring the pants off them with my …

Grats to the Grad, David!

A quick shout-out to my little brother David, who is a fully-fledged pharmacist now! He graduated this past weekend up at Uni of Pacific, which was a bit further than I could travel on short notice with a gig coming up. However, I’m super proud of the huge levels of time, commitment and hard work that he put into completing that program. Like a few unnamed others, I admittedly thought it was a whim when he first announced he was going to pharmacy school after undergrad. And like a few more unnamed others, I was horrified by the city of …
