August 2015 Harvest

Thought I’d stick up some photos of our harvest last month. I didn’t bother keeping track of the weights or quantities, but we are getting a fair amount of fruit this year. Berries of all kinds flourished while our apples didn’t do so well. The vegetables were something of a bust, since I was only able to plant them but most bolted or were covered up by weeds before I could reap the results. 7 Days of Blue/Purple Flowers

I just finished up a 7 day photography challenge over on Facebook — the husband tagged me to do 7 nature pictures and I ended up narrowing it down further for myself by deciding to do only flowers in the blue-purple spectrum that arrived on our property without my aid. Midsummer Garden Tour

Even though this year’s midsummer was mostly spent inside due to it raining all day, I had a chance to nip out in the morning and snap some pictures for my mid-season garden tour. This was the year that I was FINALLY able to get some major work done in my vegetable garden. Some design ideas are also starting to take shape for the various flower beds around the property, which I spent a few years observing before deciding what was going to stay and go. Garden Bouquets!

The best part of having a large garden is planting lots of flowers for cutting. Thanks to the mild winter and prolonged spring conditions, the garden has put out more flowers this year than I’ve ever seen. In fact, there are a few that we’ve never seen bloom before — or at least never noticed due to their low performance — the maple tree has tons of little helicopter seed clusters and the honeysuckle is covered in buds that I can’t wait to use for a desktop bouquet. In the garden again, finally!

The in-laws took Blob for the afternoon and I was finally able to make some serious progress with my veggie patch this weekend. Behind the mound of soil, you can see two herb boxes which have been cleaned out and moved into their new positions for this year. The one on the left is filled with mint, lavender, sweet basil and chives currently. More herbs to join the lineup as time permits. The lavender and chives are actually leftovers from seeds I planted two years ago, believe it or not. Didn’t even notice them until I weeded all the grass …

2015 Spring Garden Update

We’re 2/3 of the way through spring, so here’s my first garden picture roundup of the year! Mostly spring-flowering bulbs and some rhubarb right now — the fruit trees are just starting to break bud and should be flowering in another week or two. Just got back from visiting a friend in England and they are a full month’s growth ahead of us, with the berry bushes already having set fruit! We’re slower to get going in the spring, but once the days of midnight sun hit, you can practically hear the plants shooting up nonstop all around. We are breaking ground on …

Dwarf citrus in my kitchen!

So here’s something that I’m super excited about — this past week, I got my hands on not just one, but TWO, dwarf citrus plants that I have been trying to procure for years. The left is a Meyer lemon and the right is a Nagami kumquat, both already bearing fruit. The lemon has three fruits that are still several months away from ripening and is starting to flower again, while the kumquat had two ready-to-eat fruits and one that is still green. I managed to keep one kumquat on the branch for the picture, but it will probably end …

Applefest 2014, Part 2: Cinnamon Applesauce

As I mentioned in Part 1, applesauce was high up on my to-do list for canning this year. As baby food, snack, or ingredient — there’s really no bad in having lots of applesauce around. Although I had previously made it before, I never had such a glut of apples that I was able to try more than one recipe. Applefest 2014, Part 1: Homemade apple juice!

I mentioned last year that we had a few apple trees on our property. Two large ones that produce very decent cooking/eating apples and two smaller crabapples. All of them were very prolific this year, owing to a gentle spring followed by generously long growing season. For the past two years, I’ve been using a blend of these apples to make a very nice juice. Accidental asparagus.

Okay, so I might have been lying in my last post when I said I hadn’t harvested anything else this year. Looking through my camera downloads, it seems that I also managed to grab 300g of feral asparagus for the freezer on the first of June. Considering that most of June and July are a sleep-deprived blur, it’s no wonder that I totally do not recall doing this. I’m lucky I didn’t harvest something horrible poisonous instead, I was such a walking zombie. At least I’m consistent about photographing everything to make up for my appalling lack of memory.
