From Earlier This Afternoon

“Go away, you overgrown rodent. I don’t have anything to feed you.” A fat, bushy-tailed squirrel the size of a small cat chitters at me disbelievingly, staring me down with its beady black eyes. It’s obviously lived here long enough to know most people will crack and toss it some of their lunch if it looks cute and fluffy enough. Partly because the only thing I have consumable is a strawberry shake (and hell if I’ll share that with a wild rodent, no matter how big-eyed and lovable it is) but also because I know the evils an UCLA squirrel …

“Privit Property. Terspasers Will Be Persecuted”

I’ve been on some weird road trips, one could say. Last night, I ended up mentioning albinos with shotguns. Yeup. Albinos with shotguns. Let me elaborate. I live with three roommates. One of them is from Central California and the other two are from Northern California. San Jose and San Francisco, to be exact. When winter break rolled around late last year, we decided it was the ideal time to have a roommate-bonding trip. As I’ve mentioned before, I get along a lot better with this set of people than I have with any of my past roommates, so this …

In Santa Monica

I spent Quality Time with my roommates today, something we haven’t tried in a while, due to work, school and general chaos in all our schedules. We shopped. More or less. Probably less, but mall ratting is never a bad thing. Especially on a sunny weekend day outdoors when it’s all about people-watching. It started with my announcing that I needed more lotion. Viv piped in with her needing to return a nightgown and buy a set of shot glass checkers. Marie decided she needed sandals and YanYan tagged along to return a pea coat. We all pile in the …

Accidental Tourist

Sometimes I wonder just how many of my actions are being guided subconsciously, even as I continue to fool myself into believing I have free will. So I finally ventured out into the city today to pick up those damned tax forms, after much hesitation, even though it was coming upon rush hour and I knew the freeways would be packed. I need to finish them by tomorrow so that I can get them looked at before I send them out, you see. I had the choice of either going to the federal building in the Valley or heading into …

Sleepwalking

“Do you believe in ghosts?” my roommate asked me just the other night. “I used to be a hardcore science major. You’re one right now. What do you think?” “I know, but… well, I saw something.” Isn’t that always how it goes? I raised an eyebrow, but listened anyway. It seemed that the day before, she’d gotten back home late, after I’d already gone to sleep. I didn’t even hear her when she came in the room we share. Around 4ish, she said, she’d woken up to the sound of light rattling and saw a face near her right shoulder. …

Interlude

Yesterday, Sunday, I was up at 7AM. It was Persian New Year’s, you see. Alright, I admittedly did not have any clue it was until a couple of days ago when Sheila decided that she needed to bring reinforcements with her to a family picnic to save her from mind-numbing boredom. This was understandable and I thought it’d be fun to see a bit of authentic Iranian culture up close and personal. And okay, the offer of free food is always hard to pass up. So with about one and a half hours of sleep, I sprang up, changed clothes …
