Not so Blondie Brownie

I took a break from my fudge-centric ice cream purchases last week to try another flavor in the Core line, Blondie Brownie. The label read “A Soft Salted Caramel Core Surrounded by Chocolate & Vanilla Ice Creams with Chocolate Brownie chunks & Blondie Brownie chunks”, which sounded promising enough. Salted caramel is a close second to fudge in my list of favorite toppings of all time, and it didn’t disappoint in this tub. However, the blondies did. It was kind of weird — on the chocolate side, I dug up plenty of brownie bits (yes, I do fish out the …

5 Items in 9 Months -or- How I Almost Totally Avoided Buying Maternity Clothing

I like clothes. I like shopping for clothes. Heck, you don’t end up in my line of work otherwise. What I don’t like, however, is shopping for clothes that will be used so often due to lack of options over a short, intense period(s) of time that I will hate the very sight of them, only to have that followed by their gathering dust in the back of my closet for the rest of their lives because their single purpose for existing is done. That problem, combined with Rauma’s relative sparsity (read: NONE) of maternity boutiques, led me to find other options …

In which there is ice cream and flailing. (A mini Dough-ble Impact review.)

I popped by my favorite grocery store yesterday to refill my asthma meds and grab a few small items to keep us until our big supermarket binge later this week. They had moved things around since I was last there, so I spent about five minutes stalking up and down the frozen foods aisle, looking more and more perturbed with each round. There was not a single tub of Ben & Jerry’s in sight, you see. This was highly unlike them, since this is the one store that can always be counted on to have a lot of non-Finnish specialty …

Hospital Packing List

Well, here I am at 35 weeks, pretty much packed and ready to go. My carry-on sized bag is sitting in the mudroom, ready for a quick exit when the time comes. Figured I’d share my list and ask for some suggestions from y’all if there’s anything else I might not have thought of, since there is still (hopefully) plenty of time to tweak. So yes, this is what I have prepared! Please note that Finnish hospitals typically have you stay 3-4 days after the birth, especially for first-time parents and definitely if it’s a c-section. (Hopefully I will avoid …

Why my luggage is never stolen, or, London Food Haul 2011

A continuation of the gallery from yesterday, in a way. This is all the stuff that I could carry in my checked-in luggage from that same trip back in 2011. Besides being deterred by my gaudily bright-pink-patterned suitcase set, I’m pretty sure that any would-be thief who peeked inside said suitcases and saw the cumbersome pile of cheap foreign food items would just give up the situation as Totally Not Worth It. Except that it was totally worth it to me, given the difficulty in obtaining some of said items in our little corner of the country.

Fun Finnish Foods, a pictorial.

This gallery contains 15 photos.

Apologies to anybody who was having issues with using the comments system these past few days — there was a glitch involving a naughty plug-in that I just got around to figuring out last night. Everything should work just fine now. Yeah, I take pictures of random food-related things when the mood strikes me. These are pretty obviously for the peeps back in the States, since I’m sure this stuff looks pretty unremarkable to anybody on this side of the Atlantic.

Yarn stash!

This gallery contains 16 photos.

Hey look, it’s Sunday again! That means I should be updating this blog 🙂 With spring right around the corner and a big move coming, I figured it was as good a time as any to inventory and catalog stuff before packing. I’d been doing a haphazard job of keeping track of my yarn stash on Ravelry already, so today that was cleaned and updated to more accurately reflect what’s going on in that big box of fluffy cat-bait. Luckily, my yarn collection has not had time to grow very much here in Finland. I’d only brought over a small …

Return of the berries of the sea.

This post is dedicated to Keva, who hates eggs. She made a fuss about my previous post regarding fake (seaweed-based) caviar a while back, so I thought it was only fair that I share with her the real stuff 🙂 It showed up in my local grocer’s fish refrigerator last month and I had to get a jar. This isn’t my first run-in with salmon roe this side of the Atlantic, but they were probably the largest ones I’ve seen so far. Still not as generously sized as the ones I got back in Cali but I’ve come to accept that most …

Gallery of a costume change wedding.

This gallery contains 39 photos.

So a little less than a year ago, I posted some early pictures of dress choices for our wedding. Of course, I knew at the time that there would be more than one (or even two) dresses, since Asian weddings just don’t work that way. Combine that with my wardrobe mistress background and the help of several lovely attendants, and you have a costume change wedding. Selected photos from the event and some dress pictures, mostly because people have asked. I’m still in the process of putting up the official gallery website with all the guest photos, so hopefully this …

Hands down.

When it comes to accessories, few things are as gratifying to wear as a well-made pair of gloves. There’s just so much detail and construction that goes into making them, y’know? Fingers are always the first to go numb and the last to heat up when the temperatures plummet, and that can be a real nuisance when the majority of your time is spent doing things that require high levels of dexterity. There are many wardrobe pieces that one can skimp on and still find perfectly suitable knock-offs. A good pair of leather gloves is not one of these. Back …
